IT Support

Computing and Library Services provide a wide variety of facilities and support for postgraduate researchers (PGRs), many of which can be accessed via MyHud by logging in with your University username and password. There is also an enquiries desk on level 4 of the Schwann Building within the Library.

Library Support

The University of Huddersfield Library

The University of Huddersfield Library is located on level 4 of the Schwann Building and provides a wide variety of resources and services for postgraduate researchers (PGRs) including:

Access to computers

Access to over 500 PCs and 60 Macs available in the Library and in the 24/7 computer room (located on level 4 of the Schwann Building near the Santander Bank branch). 

Access to Printing

Access to printers, photocopiers and scanners including a mobile print service that allows you to print from your own device, whether you are on or off campus. 

Bookable Study Rooms

Bookable group study and presentation rooms.

Book suggestion services

Suggest a Book servce for purchasing books relevant to your research.

Dedicated PGR computer

A dedicated PGR computer suite located within the Library in room SB5/02 (Schwann Building, level 5, room 2). Floor 2 is a silent study area.

Introductory Gudies

A series of introductory guides.
Inter-Library Loans An inter-library loans service to request books and articles held by other libraries.
Library Guides Library Guides and Subject Librarians for each subject area including a dedicated research support Librarian.
Laptop Loans Services A laptop loans service. 
Library Access Library access is 24 hours a day 7 days per week during certain times of year. Follow the link for current opening hours.

One-to-one support

For one-to-one support from a subject specialist librarian, please login to HudHelp, choose “Library and Research” then “My Library”   and click on  “Book an appointment”. Alternatively, you can book via the Subject Team email at library@hud.ac.uk

PGR-Specific Workshops

PGR-specific workshops including Citations Count and The Informed Researcher, which cover topics including literature searching, Endnote and referencing. Access SkillsForge to view dates, times and to book.

PGR-Specific training and support

PGR-specific training and support including help with research data management, open access, citations and bibliometrics and advanced information searching.

Heritage Quay Archives and Records Management

Heritage Quay is the information, records management and archive service at the University of Huddersfield, housing a variety of original documents specialising in education, British 20th/21st Century music, sport, politics, theatre, art and design, and nursing.

Individual researchers can explore the online cataloguevisit the searchroom to use the archives, or if you are unable to visit, use the research and copying services.

Heritage Quay can be accessed via level 4 in the Schwann Building. You can find more information about using the collections, opening hours and contact details.

SkillsForge

Skills Forge is a system designed to help postgraduate researchers (PGRs) manage their degrees and skills training. There are two aspects to SkillsForge:

  1. Progression monitoring (recording notes from supervision meetings where both the PGR and supervisor(s) sign to confirm content and agreed future objectives).
    Booking training courses.
  2. For problems logging in to SkillsForge, contact registryresearch@hud.ac.uk.

UniDesktop

UniDesktop is a service that enables you to use a range of University software on your own desktop, laptop or tablet device either while you are away from the University, or using the wireless network on campus. To access UniDesktop and a guide for installation, login using your University username and password.

Brightspace

Brightspace is the University’s virtual learning environment (VLE). Brightspace provides access to electronic documents, blogs, wikis, discussion boards, links to various resources, a research support area, social media tools and a submission tool called Turnitin to support your studies. Brightspace replaced UniLearn as the University’s VLE at the beginning of the 2018-2019 academic year. 

PGRs have access the Researcher Environment module within Brightspace, which contains useful training materials and resources for PGRs in all disciplines. There are also School-specific Brightspace modules for PGRs and Brightspace areas to submit written work through Turnitin.
