The Academic English Centre provide help and support to international PGRs with various aspects of academic writing and speaking. Upon arriving international PGRs will be asked to undertake an English language assessment. This is not a test, but a way to tailor specific help and support because everyone’s needs are different. The emphasis is on professional development rather than remedial help through a variety of free courses and interactive workshops in small groups, targeted specifically to the needs of international PGRs.
Some examples of these are:
PGRs can also book a one-to-one session to discuss writing, ask grammar questions, or practise presentations. Researchers need to be able to communicate sophisticated information to both expert and non-expert audiences alike and The Academic English Centre will give you the tools to do this. Whatever your specific needs, the team look forward to supporting you during your research programme.
After a progression monitoring assessment, international PGRs may be asked to make an appointment with The Academic English Centre, to gain additional Academic English support. If this is the case, please email Tatyana Karpenko-Seccombe: T.Karpenko-Seccombe@hud.ac.uk and cc Diane Harper: D.Harper@hud.ac.uk requesting an appointment and include a copy of the progression monitoring report.
