Guidance for users of assistive technology
HudStudy or your DSA package may recommend using article summarising software or writing software like Grammarly to help with your spelling and grammar. Many of these tools have started to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) features, which may not always be clearly labelled as AI.
The same principles apply for students who have a PLSP and for those who don’t; the work you submit must be your own, but it is acceptable to use assistive technology to help you to prepare it.
You may use paraphrasing and summarising features to help you to understand texts you are working with, but these summaries should not be included in your final assessment. Because AI summaries may not be accurate, you should only use the summary as a guide to help you to navigate and understand the original text. Because you are primarily referring to the original text, you should reference this, not the AI summary.
Writing software can be used to help you present and format your own original work, but it should not be used to rewrite sections of your work in a way which changes the meaning. It is not acceptable to use the software to generate content which you hand in, unless this is allowed in the assessment brief and correctly referenced.
Therefore, you can use tools like Grammarly to suggest changes to how individual sentences are worded or structured, but you cannot use it to rewrite larger sections of your work. For more information, see the University Human and Computer Proof Reading Policy. Grammarly and similar software products are introducing additional tools which can be used to generate content in a similar way to ChatGPT. Your PLSP does not give you permission to use these features to generate work which you submit, unless permitted by the assessment brief..
For some pieces of work, your use of English is part of the assessment criteria. Where you are told that this is the case, please contact the module tutor to clarify what is acceptable in your specific circumstances.
If you need any advice about this, please contact your Module Leader or Personal Academic Tutor.
