How to Become a Secondary School Teacher

To become a Secondary School Teacher, you will first need to apply to one of our Secondary PGCE courses. To be eligible, you’ll need an undergraduate degree (2:2 or above) with at least 50% of its content aligned with the subject area you wish to teach.

Upon completing a Secondary PGCE course with us, you will have gained the following:

  • 120 days of hands-on teaching experience teaching 11-16 year-olds across two of our partner schools - equipping you with the confidence and practical skills to thrive in a real classroom environment.
  • A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) - an advanced academic qualification that deepens your understanding of teaching practices, educational theory, and research, distinguishing you as a skilled educator. The PGCE also serves as a pathway to a Master’s degree, providing up to 60 credits toward the 180 required for a full qualification.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - a prestigious, globally recognised qualification essential for teaching in England’s state-funded schools. Regulated by the Department for Education, it ensures high training standards and professional competence. Teachers with QTS also earn higher salaries on the qualified teacher pay scale.

Financial Support (scholarships and bursaries)

The Department for Education provides financial support for trainee teachers on some secondary subjects, either as a bursary or scholarship. The eligibility requirements for financial support vary depending on your individual circumstances and the amount you can expect to receive will depend on the subject you choose to teach and your degree classification and relevant academic qualifications. If your degree isn’t in the subject you wish to teach, you may be eligible for a funded course to increase your subject knowledge before starting your training.

You can find more information about available training bursaries on the Department for Education Get into Teaching website.

I found the mentors on my placement really useful and experienced. They gave me advice and feedback of how I can improve my practice and what I'd done well.

Subject-Specific Weeks

Subject-specific teaching weeks offer a unique and invaluable opportunity to deepen trainees curriculum knowledge, experiment with different pedagogical approaches, and critically reflect on their placement experiences. These focused weeks bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing trainees to frame their learning and refine their teaching skills in a supportive environment.
