Research Project and Dissertation Skills Workshops

These sessions are suitable for Undergraduate or Master's students. There are separate sessions for each.

The series of eight sessions will give you an opportunity to improve your skills.  The sessions are on campus or online and you can book onto as many sessions as you wish, depending on where you are in your research journey.

1: Planning your research project: Developing a research topic 
How to brainstorm ideas for your dissertations or research projects, what to include in project proposals and how to write research objectives and questions. 

2: Literature reviews 1: Preparation 
How to search for and select relevant and suitable academic sources, effective note-taking, critically evaluating evidence, identifying research gaps. 
 
3: Literature reviews 2: Writing your review 
How to structure these into sections or chapters depending on your discipline, synthesising evidence and explaining research gaps clearly as well as the difference between the format of different discipline-specific literature reviews. 

4:  Structuring extended assignments 
How to develop an overall structure and sections/chapters related to your assignment briefs and manage your workload over an extended period. 
 
5: Developing a methodology: the basics 
Covering the general expectations regarding the structure of a Methodology chapter and the core distinction between quantitative and qualitative approaches as well as the methodological approach expected in Structured or Systematic Literature Reviews.  
 
6: Findings/ Results and Discussion sections 
Covering the information you need to include in these sections/chapters and what the difference is between a Results/Findings and Discussion section. 
 
7:  Introductions, conclusions and abstracts for your project 
Helping you consider what elements are needed to write a suitable introduction and a strong conclusion and analyse the features of a clear abstract.  
 
8: Editing and proofreading 
This session will equip you to identify and correct minor errors in your writing and citation formatting which could have a notable impact on your final grade.
